SOS Children’s Villages Malawi is a non-governmental child development organization which started its operations in Malawi in 1994. We envision every child belonging to a family and growing with love, respect and security. We achieve this through building families for children in need, help them shape their own futures and share in the development of their communities.

Through our Children’s Village Programmes (CVP) we support children who have lost parental care and those at risk of losing parental care to develop within a caring family environment to their full potential as contributing members of their respective societies. We are currently operating 4 SOS Children’s Villages Programmes in Blantyre, Lilongwe, Mzuzu and Ngabu.

It is in this context that we are looking for suitable candidates to fill vacant positions at our Vocational Training Centre. 

  1. PRINCIPAL (3 YEAR FIXED TERM CONTRACT)

The Principal will supervise training programs established at the Vocational Training Centre ensuring that the trainees are provided with the highest standards of technical education and entrepreneurship skills to enable them to access wage or self-employment. She/he will oversee all administration matters concerning students and staff. She/he will motivate staff so that they work as a team in pursuit of the Centre’s goals, maintain positive relations with state education authorities and proper usage of Centre’s resources.  The Principal reports to the Programme Director.

Major responsibilities include:-

Planning

  • Develop detailed implementation plan for the Vocational Training Centre including the Young Women Technical Skills Empowerment Project
  • Develop monthly targets and activities for the Centre.
  • Support implementing partners develop detailed implementation plans – monthly, quarterly and annually.
  • Developing MoUs with industries for purposes of attaching students for industrial experience
  • Ensure the planned implementation plans are executed within the planned period and within the budget.

Project Implementation and Coordination

  • Provide overall coordination and leadership in the implementation of the technical programmes including Women Technical Skills Empowerment Project staff and franchisees.
  • Develop and execute quality implementation of plans as per the agreed project proposal within the given targets, timeframe, budget and scope of the project.
  • Provide effective coordination with franchisees for project activities implementation
  • Provide day-to-day technical and coordination support to staff under his/her supervision
  • Facilitate the identification and recruitment of franchisees including management of deliverables in line with the activities of the Centre.
  • Provide leadership in ensuring adherence to organizational procurement and project logistics requirements as stipulated in the project partnership agreement.
  • Ensure budget expenditure is in line with the set financial procedures and requirements
  • Lead and coordinate staff meetings, discussions and exchange platforms.
  • Track and closely monitor project risks/opportunities and take mitigation/capitalization measures.
  • Adherence to standards and policies of assessment and certification set up by TEVETA and international examination regulatory bodies.

Monitoring and Evaluation

  • Lead in the development/adaptation and usage of monitoring tools (indicator tracking tool, data collection etc)
  • Manage key performance indicators from the logical framework of the project and ensure that interventions are in line with the project work plan/donors agreed targets.
  • Conduct budget monitoring, tracking and taking corrective actions on variances.
  • Conduct period backstopping monitoring visits to all graduate Young Women
  • Conduct Biannual Review Meetings with SOS Children’s Villages Malawi co-workers and implementing partners in order to track project performance/progress.
  • Conduct project final evaluation to measure performance and impact of the project.

Report Writing

  • Prepare and submit monthly, quarterly and annual reports of the project to SOS Children’s Villages Malawi/ and relevant stakeholders and donors such as SOS Children’s Villages Norway for the Young Women Technical Skills Empowerment Project (both financial and activity reports) including input from partners.
  • Incorporate feedback from donors and other stakeholders and take action.

Communication

  • Communicates with TEVETA and implementing partners and other local partners.
  • Represent the project on behalf of SOS Children’s Villages Malawi through participation in relevant public events, fora and networks.

The suitable candidate must have the following minimum qualifications and attributes:-

  • Bachelor’s degree in Technical Education, Entrepreneurship or related field
  • Minimum of 8 years’ experience in Technical Education and direct project management, monitoring and evaluation within a development context.
  • Project Cycle Management, Budgeting and Budget management
  • Donor Contract Management
  • Experience in managing donor funded projects
  • Excellent report writing skills

2.         PROJECT MARKETING OFFICER FOR YOUNG WOMEN TECHNICAL

            SKILLS EMPOWERMENT PROJECT (3 YEAR FIXED TERM CONTRACT)

The Project Marketing Officer is responsible for the running of the Young Women Technical Skills Empowerment Project and he/she reports to the Principal.

Major responsibilities include:-

Project Management

  • Support planning and implementation of the project.
  • Develop daily plans and monitor operations of the project.
  • Work hand in hand with the franchisees
  • Identify and report trends and priorities needed for the project.
  • Determine the gaps in service delivery and recommend strategies for improvement
  • Work collaboratively with communities, trainees and stakeholders,
  • Support in creating  a database of stakeholders  for young women internship; placement and entrepreneurship ventures

People Management

  • Support  communication with franchisees including recruitment, hiring, training, guidance and supervision in consultation with the Principal
  • Support capacity building of franchisees in consultation with the Principal
  • Monitor the implementation of  project work plans including those by franchisees

Administrative and Financial Management of the Project

  • Participate in developing the budget for the project in consultation with the Principal
  • Support monitoring and management of project expenditures.
  • Submit monthly, quarterly and annual statistics and project reports.
  • Develop a digital and physical filing system for all project documents.
  • Create and manage an equipment and assets database; scheduling and ensuring equipment maintenance
  • Facilitate job placements and linkages formulation for in collaboration with franchisees

Marketing

  • Identify markets and secure contracts in partnership with franchisees for products.
  • Market the project to would be clients.
  • Develop and implement visibility strategies in consultation with the Principal

  The suitable candidate must have the following minimum qualifications and attributes:-

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Business Management or relevant field
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in managing projects
  • Experience of working with young women in vocational skills is an added advantage
  • Capacity to work with multi-disciplinary team and people from diverse cultural backgrounds
  • Excellent command of spoken and written English and Chichewa
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to establish partnerships.

3.         ACCOUNTS ASSISTANT (3 YEAR FIXED TERM CONTRACT)

The Project Accounts Assistant is responsible for the provision of accounting services and processing of financial information within the Programme location. He/she reports to the Programme Accountant.

Major responsibilities include:-

Manages the Petty Cash of the Project.

  • Issues petty cash to Project staff upon production of a certified documentation, confirmed by the Coordinator and approved by Programme Accountant.
  • Submits the monthly Petty Cash register as well as supporting receipts and vouchers to the Programme Accountant for petty cash replenishment.
  • Prepares the monthly Petty cash register.
  • Prepares the Monthly Petty Cash reconciliation statement and submit to the Programme Accountant

Performs Detailed Financial Tasks

  • Prepares payment vouchers and cheque requisition forms for the project.
  • Prepares the Cash Books for Programme Bank Accounts.
  • Prepares the manual bank reconciliations and submit to the Programme Accountant.
  • Captures/Inputs data into Navision Accounting System.

Performs Administrative Tasks

  • Ensures that all office equipment is appropriately maintained.
  • Ensures that all office equipment are registered under Asset/Inventory register
  • Ensures that all the Assets have barcodes

Keeps Record of Banking

  • Ensures that Accounting data is in place
  • Ensures that all Project documents are filed accordingly
  • Prepares quarterly Project Financial Report and submit to the Programme Accountant         

The suitable candidate must have the following minimum qualifications and attributes:-

  • Diploma in Accountancy / Administrative Studies
  • 3 years’ experience in a busy accounts office,
  • Knowledge of Navision Accounting package is an added advantage.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills,
  • Result-oriented and ability to prioritize and meet tight deadlines.

4.  LABORATORY ASSISTANT

The Laboratory Assistant is responsible for the management of the secondary school laboratories and assisting teachers during experiments.  The Laboratory Assistant reports to the Head Teacher of the Secondary School.

Major responsibilities include:-

  • Overall management of  the Herman Gmeiner Secondary School laboratories 
  • Guide preparation of academic experiments and practical examinations
  • Conduct regular checks to ensure labs and storerooms are kept tidy and safe
  • Ensure that the right equipment, apparatus, tools, chemicals and other materials are adequately stocked and kept in working condition.
  • Provide guidance to teaching departments and students on appropriate and safe use of laboratory facilities, equipment and apparatus.
  • Support setting up of academic experiments and practical demonstrations to enhance student’s theoretical learning.
  • Help to maintain compliance with health, safety and security regulations.
  • Writing reports of laboratory activities and Reporting results to supervisor;

The suitable candidate must have the following minimum qualifications and attributes:-

  • MSCE with good credits in English and science subjects especially physical science and Mathematics, a Certificate / Diploma in a related Field will have an added advantage
  • Knowledge and experience in safety and risk assessment procedures
  • Working experience of 3 years or more in a laboratory (educational or industrial)
